A trip to Home Depot always means figuring out what other future projects might need parts. Before we headed out to buy all the bits and pieces for the light box, Nick and I pondered another little problem we were trying to solve on the pottery front.
Problem:
Between firings, I’ve been storing my kiln shelves (other than the bottom two, which stay in the kiln) by precariously leaning them against the wall by the kiln. No es bueno.
Nick’s Solution:
Using PVC (and some casters we happened to have), Nick created a rolling, easy to clean and very sturdy shelf rack. Nifty, if I do say so myself! Here is set up in situ:

point one–you have a beautiful tile or stone floor in your studio?????
point 2–WHOA–clever storage solution
point 3–guess what I mixed yesterday, HAR!
point 4–I think the test piece for licorice here will be something with a zebra on top….

point one-Thanks! The kiln/glaze room and laundry room (where the light box was set up) both have this tile. My studio is one level up and has a polished concrete floor. You can read all about it here: http://nickandmiri.wordpress.com/2009/03/01/adventures-in-floor-staining/ Someday I’ll have to do a video walk through ala GR…
point 2 – Thanks! Nick is very clever indeed!
point 3 and 4 – looking forward to seeing your test results!

Point 5 – thank you so much for posting this storage idea and especially for the pvc light box plan. I just received my graduated backdrop in the mail and I was trying to explain how to build this same type of pvc light box to my husband Gary and he was trying to figure out which connectors to get to build it and you have it all listed below – thank you, thank you, thank you ever so much.

You’re very welcome Linda! Glad we could help! I’m very curious about your graduated backdrop. Clearly, I went for the cheap option but I love the results you get from “professional” backdrops. Where did you order yours from?

It appears Nick never outgrew his Tinker Toys stage
! I’m not knocking it, I think you guys have come up with some very clever and cost-saving solutions with PVC pipe! Anything made with plastic or cement can withstand the tropic scourges of mold and rust! Fran

Fran you are absolutely right!
I used to love Lego as a kid, and I think PVC pipe is the closest thing to it that adults are ‘allowed’ to play with!

Hi Miri, I got the backdrop from Photo Tech Inc via the internet.
http://www.phototechinc.com/graduate.htm
I got the Varitone vinyl #39 which is 31 x 43, I will be posting soon showing comparisons of my photos without a backdrop, with a backdrop, and then with the pvc light box (once I get it made). All photos up to this point on my blog have had white or black poster paper or whatever the background happened to be.
Thanks to you Nick.

Thanks Linda. I’ll be very interested to see your comparison photos!

nick is a man after my own heart. pvc is a grownup tinker toy and a solution to many problems… i’ll have to post my pvc-hold-your-pot-upside-down-so-you-can-pour-glaze-over-it thingie sometime.

Yes please! I’d love to see the pot glazing PVC gadget! No rush but we’re going back to Home Depot tomorrow…
