When we arrived in PR we had a hire car lined up for the first month, with the plan being to buy a used car in that time frame. Amazingly enough, this plan has actually gone… well… to plan.

We’d spent a long time checking cars online and had visited a couple of dealerships but been very disappointed with their offerings. Given the state of the roads here and the number of steep hills we’d decided long ago we wanted an SUV (Wikipedia link provided for our British readers) rather than a regular saloon car. We’d considered and rejected a number of makes & models for price and practicality reasons. Having given up on the dealers and their over-priced, over-mileaged cars with 2 weeks (yes, 2 weeks!) warranty, we started looking more seriously at private sales. Miri found one in Aguada (the next town over) and after some haggling the deal was done…

Our new car!

We are now the proud owners of a 2002 Ford Escape with just 41,000 miles on the clock. We picked it up yesterday and sorted the insurance out today. We’ll get the permanent vehicle licence document on Friday and then we need to get a vehicle inspection certificate and a ‘Marbetta’ (equivalent of annual road tax) over in Aguadilla by the end of the month and we’re all set.
