This evening I was about to start dinner when I heard a light knock on the door. It was our neighbor Julie with an invite to join her and her family for dinner. Honestly, we had no idea what to expect as, to date, we have not interacted socially with our neighbors above and beyond day-to-day friendliness (Buenas, Como estas etc). And yes, we were a bit anxious about it all, what with us not speaking much Spanish and them not speaking much English.
Our fears were for naught. We had a delightful time, meeting the extended family (about 25 folks), many of whom live up the road, partaking in a game of dominos (we lost….), enjoying traditional beverages (including the beloved coquito and local moonshine) and just being social. Many of the family members spoke passable English, which did make things a bit easier. However, the welcoming smiles and warm acceptance needed no translation.
